On Thursday, 10 October 2024, the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendiashad a private meeting with the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports Kyriakos Pierrakakis. The subject of the meeting was how to attract young people to Military Academies.

Mr. Dendias and Mr. Pierrakakis then announced certain actions, in a presentation at "Kapodistrias" hall of the Ministry of National Defence, to make the admission and studies in Military Academies more attractive.

The presentation was also attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Ioannis Kefalogiannis, the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Choupis, the General Secretary of the Ministry of National Defence Antonios Ikonomou, and the General Secretary for Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports Nikolaos Papaioannou.

Some first interventions include:

  • Admission from 3 Scientific Fields (directions) and Vocational Training High Schools for 10% of admissions.

  • A raise in Military Academy student compensation.

  • Issuance of student's card to all Military Academy students.

  • The improvement of facilities and equipment.

  • New prospects for research, specialisation, and career advancement within the framework of the 2030 Agenda.

  • A campaign to inform students.

During the presentation, the Minister of National Defence stressed the following:

"First, I would like to welcome the Minister of Education Kyriakos Pierrakakis to the Ministry of National Defence. It is a great pleasure and honour to have Mr. Pierrakakis here with us today.

We tried together to approach this very important issue. I don't think I need to mention the importance of the production of new Armed Forces officers for our country and the huge problem the current situation creates if it continues.

We will jointly present a few measures, which are but a first response. We are not naive. We do not believe that this response is sufficient and that it is the final answer of the Hellenic Republic to the crisis we are going through. But I believe that it proves that the Mitsotakis Government is responsive and does not shy away from national responsibility.

In conclusion, I would like to stress the excellent cooperation between the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Education and the broader national approach of the Ministry of Education and the great attention paid, especially by the Minister, to the constitutional role that our country's Armed Forces are called to serve.

Kyriakos, thank you very much for being here today. Thank you for the cooperation. Thank you for the help".

The Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports stated the following:

"I would also like thank you very much. Ladies and gentlemen, Minister, dear Nikos, it is a great pleasure and honour for my partners and me personally to be here at the hospitable Ministry of National Defence.

I would also like to truly thank you for the cooperation. It is an important issue to which we, as Ministry of Education, tried to contribute with a series of proposals which, as the Minister said, are only a first response to an issue that has been noticed and which we have to correct.

It is not just an educational issue. I would argue that it is a primarily national issue, a matter of national existence and for this reason we will contribute however we can to these first measures, which we did.

Of course the value added here, as you will see in the bundle of measures, goes primarily to the Ministry of National Defence, however I think that we, as Ministry of Education, also added a series of actions, which you will find in due time to be beneficial.

Once again, thank you very much and I would like to say that our cooperation has been a great pleasure and honour.

Dear Nikos, my friend Nikos, it is very important for us to have synergies to solve problems such as those arising and I want to say that we are at your disposal for any other similar cooperation".

The detailed presentation of the actions is attached below.
