SEIU's Verrett: Biden-Harris Student Loan Relief Will Transform Lives of Millions of Working Families

WASHINGTON - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President April Verrett issued the following statement in response to the Biden-Harris Administration's proposed rules aimed at providing student loan relief to nearly 8 million borrowers facing financial hardships.

"For too long, working people have struggled under the weight of student loan debt, often exacerbated by medical expenses, childcare costs, and other economic challenges. Today's proposed rules from the Biden-Harris Administration represent a significant victory for hardworking Americans and a much-needed reform of our student loan system

This initiative is a crucial step toward easing the burdens of those struggling with medical bills, childcare costs, and other economic challenges, including natural disasters. It highlights the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to alleviating the financial strains faced by millions of hard working Americans, including our educators and healthcare workers. More than just financial relief, this effort aims to restore hope and opportunity, ensuring that higher education serves as a pathway to the middle class rather than a barrier to success. We commend their dedication to making student debt relief accessible to those who need it most.

While some Republican leaders attempt to obstruct these efforts through the courts, the Biden-Harris Administration remains steadfast in its mission to support borrowers and improve access to affordable education. The proposed rules signify a continued effort to correct a flawed system that has left millions struggling under unmanageable debt.

This is a monumental step forward, and we urge the Department of Education to finalize these rules swiftly. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for our members and all Americans burdened by student debt."
