The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is proud to present the featured works of artist Laura Atkins in a unique exhibit, entitled "Narrative Journeys in Paint," in The Gallery at Cherry Hill now through December 3, 2024. An opening art reception will be held on Thursday, November 14 from 6 - 8 p.m. that is free and open to the public.
Laura Atkins was born in the Detroit area in 1961. After a career as a Surgical Nurse, she is now gaining notoriety as a self-taught artist. She took this path after being unable to find an art school that taught a realistic style of painting. Despite being told that no one was painting realism, Atkins was not interested in Modern Art. In her own words, "I wanted to paint like the old Masters that I was familiar with at the museums!"
Her distinctive paintings portray the unnatural world with a sense of romance and mystery. It is also said that her work presents an uncomfortable mix of nostalgia and lamentation of mythological expression. Adding further complexity to the diverse interpretations of her work, she blurs the line between truth and fiction by using old masters' techniques. She creates visual illusions to trick the eye into perceiving a painted detail as three-dimensional to reveal a convincing perspective of an imagined place or time.
Atkin's pensive paintings are rife with both unseen and deeply felt forces: seemingly paradoxical impulses that are integral to her work. Quite a few of her paintings contain recognizable elements, although she is just as influenced by metaphors as she is by today's news. She has shown her work in both the United States and Europe, where she also has collectors.
This art exhibit at The Gallery at Cherry Hill is free and open to the public during gallery hours: Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.; during all public performances; or by special appointment arranged via email to [email protected].
