Firefighters Battle Fire at James Street Apartment
Syracuse, NY- On Saturday December 14, 2024 at 3:06 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported apartment fire at 469 James Street. Firefighters from Station 2 on Lodi Street arrived at the scene a minute later and found a three-story garden-style apartment building with fire visible from a second-floor apartment. Hose lines were stretched up the stairwell and across the walkway to the fire apartment. The Incident Commander transmitted a signal '99', indicating a working fire.
As firefighters moved hoses to confine the fire to one apartment and extinguish it, other teams prepared to methodically search the entire building. Two hoses were stretched to the fire apartment and one to the apartment above. All occupants evacuated on their own. Teams of firefighters removed multiple dogs from multiple apartments. The fire was extinguished after 10 minutes and declared out after approximately 15 minutes. Crews remained at the scene for approximately another hour and a half, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.
The building contains multiple apartments, and the fire occurred in apartment 20. That apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage; other parts of the building also suffered smoke and water damage. This fire displaced one occupant; they are being assisted by the Red Cross. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined the fire started in an electrical outlet in apartment 20 and was accidental. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.
A total of 37 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
