LANSING, Mich. - The U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG) has started the installation of stormwater treatment chambers at Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center to remove per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from stormwater before it reaches Lake Margrethe.
The goal of the chambers is to remove PFAS before they reach Outfalls #3 and #4 (see attached maps). For the Outfall #3 stormwater line, the system consists of two buried concrete vaults located south of the Soldier Road #3 culvert. For the Outfall #4 swale, two treatment chambers are being installed, to address the water discharging to Soldier Road #4 culvert.
"To protect human health and the environment, and to acknowledge the essential role of defense communities in national security, the ARNG is committed to promptly addressing its PFAS releases," said Lieutenant Colonel CJ Mosley, ARNG. "One year ago, the ARNG pledged to quickly implement interim cleanup measures for PFAS found in stormwater discharged from Camp Grayling. With work on permeable reactive barriers at Outfalls 3 and 4 starting on October 14, the ARNG is fulfilling its commitment to the community by swiftly addressing these PFAS releases."
Personnel from the ARNG along with representatives from the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) visited Grayling in late October to review progress on the stormwater system.
The next meeting of the RAB is Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 6-7 p.m. This is a virtual meeting only. Use the following link to join the meeting on Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86914488276.
