"The Border War rivalry game versus Wyoming is one of the oldest rivalries in the West dating back 125-years and features one of the most iconic trophies in college football," said Director of Athletics John Weber. "The Boot Run with the game ball, the Border Ceremony, and the Bronze Boot Trophy all honor the values and rich ROTC history of both of our universities and will remain integral to this rivalry for years to come. This game is important to our universities, communities, and fans; and I am thrilled that this historic rivalry will continue."
Heading into the 2024 season, the teams have played 115 times since 1899 and every year since 1946 - 78 consecutive seasons - following World War II. The Border War series is tied for the eighth longest played in FBS history and is the third-oldest rivalry game west of the Mississippi River (behind Cal-Stanford, 1892, Oregon-Oregon State, 1894, and tied with Arizona-Arizona State, 1899).
"With all the changes in college football, it's great to maintain a rivalry that has been played for 125 years," said head coach . "It means so much to our fans and community that we continue this historic rivalry. Rivalries are what make college football special and to play programs that are close to you in proximity where it means so much to so many in your community, it's great to preserve that."
Colorado State and Wyoming will face each other for the final times as Mountain West foes, the first being on Nov. 15 in Canvas Stadium and for the final time in Laramie in 2025. CSU is set to move to the Pac-12 starting in 2026. The series will be idle in 2026 and 2027 where both programs currently have full non-conference schedules.
Since 1968, the Border War game winner is awarded the Bronze Boot - a boot worn by Colorado State ROTC professor Captain Dan J. Romero during his service in The Vietnam War from 1966-67. The boot was encased in bronze, mounted on a wooden base, and for the past 56 games has served as the symbol of the great rivalry and great ROTC detachments at both universities.
Each year members of the Colorado State and Wyoming ROTC detachments run a portion of the 66-mile distance on U.S. Highway 287 and meet at the Colorado and Wyoming border to exchange the game ball.
Over the summer of 2021, the Bronze Boot was disassembled and left the confines of the state of Wyoming or Colorado for the first time to be restored to its original glory. The boot itself was sent to Escondido, Calif., to be restored by The Bronzery, one of the last remaining foundries in the country that can bronze a physical object. The walnut base was restored by Alpine Cabinets in Timnath, Colo.
