The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Welcomes Denise M. Verret as 100th Board Chair

Silver Spring, Md. (October 24, 2024) The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is thrilled to announce Denise Verret, chief executive officer and director of the Los Angeles Zoo in Los Angeles, Calif., as the 100th chair of its Board of Directors.

"Not only am I humbled to lead such a distinguished association, but I am also deeply proud to be the first black woman to do so in our history," said Verret. "Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism for the future of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and our mission. For 100 years, this profession has seen profound change for the better. Together, we will build upon our rich legacy-embracing the new Strategic Plan and upholding our promises, knowing that our work not only enriches lives―but also ensures a sustainable future for people and wildlife to thrive, together."

Verret's induction as chair coincided with the unveiling of AZA's new strategic plan at this year's Annual Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Board of Directors will play a vital role in implementing the strategic plan, which focuses on increasing the collective impact of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums by advancing conservation, animal welfare, animal population sustainability, and member support. The strategic plan also emphasizes collaboration among institutions; public engagement in wildlife conservation; and a commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion-all while ensuring the organization's long-term sustainability and leadership.

"This is a momentous time for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and we are honored to have Denise Verret lead the Board of Directors as our 100th Board chair, said Dan Ashe, president and chief executive officer of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. "In addition to her leadership at the Los Angeles Zoo, Denise has spent more than 20 years championing conservation and shaping the future of AZA through her work as an accreditation inspector, participation on numerous committees, and service as a board member. Her vision, passion, and dedication inspire us all, and I can think of no one better suited to guide AZA into its next century."

In addition to Verret's appointment, the board has also welcomed three new members:

  • Dr. Luis Padilla, president and CEO of Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Neb., and Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari in Ashland, Neb.
  • Lisa Peterson, senior vice president and executive director of San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, Calif.
  • Carrie Lewis, president and CEO of the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore.
