Vientiane, 19 October 2024: Dr Aladdin Rillo, ERIA's Managing Director for Policy Design and Operations, attended the 45th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). Held in Lao PDR on 19 October 2024, the assembly adopted the theme, 'The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN.' Dr Rillo was accompanied by an ERIA delegation who participated in the opening ceremony and the first plenary session.

In his remarks, Dr Rillo emphasised the importance of close collaboration between ERIA and AIPA to develop evidence-based policies that address ASEAN's challenges in achieving connectivity and inclusive growth. While acknowledging the progress made, he stressed that significant gaps remain. He called for data-driven approaches, accurate indicators, and robust governance to guide policymaking. Dr Rillo highlighted the need for strong institutions to ensure effective implementation of regional agendas, particularly as ASEAN moves towards its post-2025 economic integration. He urged parliamentarians to prioritise sustainable and inclusive development through continued cooperation.

Notably, ERIA and AIPA renewed their memorandum of understanding during the 15th AIPA Caucus Meeting in Brunei Darussalam in June 2024, further strengthening their partnership in addressing ASEAN's regional challenges.
