Chair Cardin Commends the Moldovan People for Vote in Favor of European Future

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after Moldovans voted on Sunday to enshrine in their constitution the nation's ambition to join the European Union.

"The Moldovan people's affirmative vote for a European future is a testament to the progress made in recent years under President Sandu's leadership. The Moldovan government has taken important steps to combat corruption and make sure democracy delivers for its citizens. As President Sandu has noted, there is much more work to be done, and partners across Europe and the United States stand ready to support the Moldovan people every step of the way.

"This historic decision follows significant efforts by the Kremlin to sow confusion and misinformation as part of Moscow's ongoing effort to undermine Moldovan democracy - the scale of which we will only fully understand in the months to come. Despite this interference, the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights noted that the Moldovan Central Election Commission administered effective and transparent elections. I will continue to urge those with the ability to support the Moldovan government in creating a fair election environment, including Meta and Alphabet, to make sure that all decisions affecting their country are made by the Moldovan people alone."
