DOC DASHBOARD UPDATE: NYC Comptroller Releases New Monthly Data on Department of Corrections

New York, NY - The Office of the New York City Comptroller released its monthly update to the Department of Correction (DOC) Dashboard, available here. Key monthly DOC metrics show:

• DOC housed 6,503 individuals as of September 1, 127 more people than as of August 1.

• 2,055 individuals entered DOC custody in August, 111 fewer people than the previous month.

• DOC discharged 1,988 people in August, 8 fewer people than the previous month.

• The average length of a person detained in DOC custody was 97 days in August, one more day than the previous month's average.

• DOC failed to produce 137 of 7,407 individuals in custody for a scheduled court appearance in August, an increase of 16 individuals than the previous month.

• 21 of 7,270 individuals delivered to court did not have a recorded time of arrival, 16 more people than the previous month.

• The Comptroller's Office did not receive updated staffing data from DOC for August.

• Incidents of violence in August:
  • 72 recorded assaults, 1 more than the previous month.
  • 19 slashings and stabbings occurred, 4 more than the previous month.
  • 612 fights, 28 fewer than the previous month.

The Comptroller's dashboard, first published in August 2022, monitors pervasive issues in the City's jails, including staff absenteeism, missed medical appointments, and incidents of violence among detained people and staff. It also tracks the jail population every month and length of stay. The Comptroller's Office publishes data to this dashboard monthly to provide increased transparency and accountability over the City's jail system.
