The Consumer Federation of America, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, and National Consumer League submitted a comment to the Federal Trade Commission to express support for their case against Rytr, a company that facilitated the generation of fake reviews at scale in violation of the FTC act, as well as push for stronger remedies in this case and beyond. The case was an important use of the Means & Instrumentalities doctrine, which allows the FTC to bring enforcement actions against entities furnishing the means to violate the law. The coalition pushed for remedies that would require companies outputting content to restrict outputs when prompts are clearly intended to violate the law.
