TERRE HAUTE, IND. (November 18, 2024) - The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., and Indiana American Water, announced today that the Foundation awarded the Terre Haute Children's Museum a $50,000 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education grant for a new interactive water exhibit that is being developed to teach young people the importance of protecting water resources.
"This grant will help us narrow the gap on creating a new water table feature on the second floor of the Museum and will be reflective of the Wabash River and Wabashiki wetlands which are vital natural resources for the Terre Haute region," said Susan Turner, Executive Director, Terre Haute Children's Museum. "We are honored that our local and state Indiana American Water team members nominated us for this donation. This is just one piece of a larger master facility plan the museum is undertaking and hopes to unveil in the coming years."
"This new STEM exhibit will play a crucial role in educating children about the importance of water conservation and sustainability. We believe that fostering an early appreciation for water's vital role in our ecosystem will inspire the next generation of environmental stewards," said Matthew Prine, President, Indiana American Water.
When it is introduced to the public, the exhibit area, located on the second floor of the museum, will be called "The Healthy Haute" and it will tell the story of how the City of Terre Haute and the farms in the surrounding areas connect in important ways via the areas rich water resources. The interactive water exhibit that will let children explore the many ways local residents interact with the river (fishing, boating, exploring river animal habitats) as well as how intermodal transportation moves farm products and other goods throughout the region.
