LAPD Motorcycle Officer Struck By Vehicle In Chinatown
A Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officer was struck by a vehicle in the Chinatown area of downtown Los Angeles Monday afternoon. The officer was hit by a black sedan at about 1 p.m. while helping direct traffic at Sunset Boulevard and Figueroa Street, according to police and footage from the scene. The officer was believed to be at that location because of the Dodgers playoff game against the New York Mets. Dodger Stadium is about a mile from the site of the incident. The officer was taken to a local hospital, Lt. Humberto Najera told KTLA. He was reportedly in stable condition. The driver of the dark sedan remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

L.A. Mom Charged With Murder In Death Of Her 3-Month-Old Baby
A mother from Porter Ranch has been charged with murder in the death of her 3-month-old baby, authorities said Friday. The woman, identified by the L.A. County district attorney's office as Jalyn Simone SmithJermott, 21, faces one count of murder and one felony count of assault on a child causing death, according toa release from the D.A.'s office. She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life if convicted, prosecutors said. Authorities said the baby was found not breathing in his bassinet on Sept. 10 and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Eric Shannon Johnson, 35, who authorities said is the baby's father, has also been charged with one felony count of child abuse. He pleaded not guilty Monday and his next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday. If convicted as charged, he faces up to six years in prison. "Children, especially babies, depend on their parents and loved ones for care and nurturing. It is a profound betrayal when that trust is shattered," Dist. Atty. George Gascón said in a statement.

Investigation Underway After 18-Year-Old Shot To Death In San Pedro
An investigation was underway after a teenager was shot and killed in San Pedro. The deadly incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday at 7th Street and Grand Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Witnesses told police two men approached the 18-year-old victim, shot him multiple times and then ran off. The teen boy, whose name has not been released, died at the scene. No arrests have been made. Authorities could not provide a motive for the shooting, including whether or not it was gang-related.

Man Dies After Early Morning Shooting In North Hollywood
A man was shot and killed in North Hollywood early Tuesday morning, officials said. Investigators said the shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. near the intersection of Hatteras Street and Tujunga Avenue. When Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found a man standing outside who was suffering from a gunshot wound in his chest. He was taken to an area hospital where he died. The LAPD said a slow-moving vehicle approached the victim and left the scene after firing at least 10 rounds. The suspect's vehicle was described as a late-model gray Nissan four-door sedan. Those with information are asked to contact the LAPD.

Investigation Underway After Man Gets Stabbed In Downtown Los Angeles
Authorities are investigating a stabbing that happened in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday evening. It happened at around 8 p.m. in the 1000 block of Sunset Boulevard near the 110 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, but officers arrived to the scene and found a man suffering from at least one stab wound. The victim was treated at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. It's unclear if they required transport to a nearby hospital and what their condition was at the latest. Police say that a male suspect who was last seen wearing a white shirt and khaki shorts had already fled from the scene by the time they arrived. No further information was provided by detectives.

Man Wounded In Wilmington Shooting
A 58-year-old man was in the hospital after he was shot in the Wilmington area of Los Angeles, authorities said Monday. The man was wounded at about 11:25 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Watson Avenue, according to a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center. The victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital where his vital signs were stable, the officer said. The man did not provide investigators with a suspect description, he said.

Car Slams Into Multiple Other Vehicles In South Los Angeles While Fleeing Takeover: LAPD
A street takeover left at least a half dozen vehicles smashed and a man possibly armed with a gun was taken into custody in the Broadway-Manchester area of South Los Angeles early Monday morning. A man armed with a firearm was reported just before 3:45 a.m., and he was taken into custody near Colden Avenue and San Pedro Street just before 4 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison. It's unclear if firearms were located, Madison added. Nearby at about the same time, a street takeover of unknown size resulted in at least one vehicle barrelling down a South Los Angeles street, smashing into about a dozen vehicles before fleeing the scene, police said. It's unclear if the allegedly armed man and the street takeover were connected, but witnesses told KTLA's Kimberly Cheng that a stolen Infiniti that crashed into the vehicles trying to evade police. Madison said this was not a police pursuit. Cheng added that six cars with visible damage were still on the street later Monday morning, two of which belonged to one neighbor who asked to remain anonymous.

Wildfire Insurance Scam In Southern California Nets Thieves $75,000
Three people have been arrested in connection with a scheme to defraud insurance companies out of tens of thousands of dollars by filing false claims for bodily injury, car crashes and property damage resulting from the 2019 Saddle Ridge Fire in the San Fernando Valley, officials announced last week. The Saddle Ridge Fire burned nearly 9,000 acres in the Sylmar area over 21 days. In a press release from the California Department of Insurance, officials said 43-year-old Porter Ranch resident Pedram Sharokhi, his wife 37-year-old Shabnam Rahbar Vafaee, and their associate 40-year-old Reseda resident Jimmy Swinder conspired to commit insurance fraud, grand theft, identity theft, forgery, money laundering and the unlawful practice of law for personal gain. "The investigation found Sharokhi, who is not a licensed California attorney, was acting as a practicing attorney and on behalf of actual licensed attorneys without their knowledge," officials said. Neither Vafaee or Swinder are licensed attorneys either. Swinder's law license was suspended in Aug. 2019.

BWC: Woman Charges Virginia Officer With Knife, Slashes Him In Head Before Fatal OIS
Fairfax County police have released body camera footage of a fatal shooting in which a woman attacked an officer with a knife, leading to a fatal officer-involved shooting, WTOP reported. The incident took place on Sept. 16 when police were called to conduct a welfare check on a 33-year-old woman who was in an "agitated state," according to the report. Body camera footage shows an officer knocking on the woman's door at her apartment complex. The woman initially opened the door, but quickly shut it as the officer identified himself. When the officer knocked a second time, the woman opened the door and immediately attacked, slashing at him with a knife and striking him in the head. The officer ordered her to stop, but the woman continued advancing, forcing him to back into a dead-end hallway. As she charged toward him, the officer fired three shots to stop the attack. Despite emergency personnel's efforts to render aid, the woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the report. The officer sustained a non-life-threatening head wound and is currently on restricted duty while both a criminal investigation and an internal affairs review are conducted. Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis praised the officer's efforts to de-escalate the situation before being forced to open fire.

Assaults On NYPD Officers Up 41% Since 2023 As Part Of Continuous 5-Year Rise
Assaults on NYPD officers have surged to unprecedented levels, rising 41% this year compared to the same period in 2023, and 60% since 2019, the New York Post reported. So far in 2024, 1,975 officers have been assaulted, compared to 1,763 at this time last year, according to NYPD data obtained by the New York Post. This marks the fifth consecutive year of increased attacks on police, far exceeding the 1,253 assaults recorded in 2019. "They think they can take a swing at a cop and get away with it, because they believe the justice system is on their side," Police Benevolent Association president Patrick Hendry told the New York Post. NYPD Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael Lipetri confirmed that these attacks are contributing to an overall 5% rise in assaults across the city, according to the report. So far this year, 22,806 assaults have been recorded, compared to 21,712 at the same point in 2023. Lipetri noted that police officers are engaging with more dangerous individuals, which is leading to an increase in violent encounters.

3 Middle School Students Hospitalized After Consuming Cannabis Edibles In Northridge
Three girls were hospitalized Monday after possibly ingesting cannabis-derived edibles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters responded to Nobel Charter Middle School located at 9950 N. Tampa Avenue in Northridge around 2:20 p.m. on a report of students possibly ingesting the edibles. At least five students became ill. Three were taken to the hospital in fair condition, while two others were released to their parents at the school after being evaluated. No other information was immediately available.
