This December, Explore Volusia has something for everyone. Below are all the events, and registration is mandatory for each. Eco-buggy at Night:
When: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 4
Where: Deep Creek Preserve, 964 S. SR - 415., New Smyrna Beach
Requirements: All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes.


Discover what creatures lurk in the night at Deep Creek Preserve! Discuss the myths and facts of some of the nocturnal animals, including owls and bats, found in Volusia County. Afterward, there will be s'mores by the fire at the newest county conservation land campsite.

Sleepy Hollow Paddle:
When: 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 6
Where: Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve, 3251 N. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach
Requirements: Ages 12 and up are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Paddlers must bring their watercraft, a personal flotation device such as a life jacket, and a whistle. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet.


Paddle and explore the diversity of this amazing estuary. Discover why estuaries are so important to the life cycles of many animals that call the Atlantic Ocean home.

Wiregrass Prairie Hike:
When: 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 11
Where: Wiregrass Prairie Preserve, 1751 Lopez Road, Osteen
Requirements: Ages 10 and up are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet.


Take a two-mile hike through Wiregrass Prairie Preserve, and discover the beauty of the pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and wet prairies that make up this remote preserve.

Lake George State Forest Eco-buggy:
When: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 13
Where: Lake George State Forest, 1345 Bluffton Road, Astor
Requirements: All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes.
Meet at the multi-use parking area at the intersection of St. Johns River Road and Bluffton Road off of State Road 40. The parking area is located 2 miles south of the St. Johns River Road and State Road 40 entrance of Lake George State Forest.


This ride is an educational tour of Lake George State Forest. Florida Forest Service staff will discuss forest management, recreation, and habitat management on an eco-buggy tour of the Dexter Mary Farms tract in Lake George State Forest.

Explore Volusia Challenge Preserve Number 4:
When: 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, December 20
Where: Deep Creek Preserve, 964 S. SR - 415, New Smyrna Beach
Requirements: Ages 8 and up are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes.


Participate in a 1.2-mile hike in Deep Creek Preserve, the fourth preserve in this year's challenge. While hiking learn about the 2024-2025 Explore Volusia Challenge, and how to register and participate.
