Suspect Arrested After an Aggravated Assault

At about 1:00 PM, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, officers assigned to District A-1 (Downtown) arrested John Madej, 51, of South Boston, for aggravated assault.

Officers responded to the area of 10 Park Plaza for a report of a person chasing people with a machete. Boston Police Operations provided officers with a description of the suspect, and that he was trying to attack someone.

Officers observed the suspect in the area of Boylston Street and Charles Street. As officers approached the suspect, he took up a fighting stance. Officers were able to quickly apprehend the suspect, and recovered a hunting knife from his front right pants' pocket.

Madej was placed under arrest and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon. Officers also determined that the suspect had a warrant for his arrest for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
