CHICAGO (October 22, 2024) -Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing lead-contaminated soil at the former Sandusky Chicago Abrasive Wheel Company, Inc. site, at 1100 W. Barker Ave. in Michigan City, Indiana. EPA anticipates the cleanup will take 2-4 months to complete and short-term road closures near the site may be necessary.

Cleanup crews will spray water on soil to control dust and will monitor the air quality. EPA will dispose of the contaminated soil at an approved landfill.

EPA began collecting soil samples at this site in June 2023 at the request of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Results confirmed high concentrations of lead and arsenic. For more information about the potential health effects of exposure to lead and arsenic, go to Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Toxicological Profiles or ToxGuides.
