The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is requesting reports of vacant units to help housing survivors displaced as a result of a disaster event. In addition, LeadingAge has compiled a disaster preparation and response resource.

The 2024 hurricane season has set somber records and impacted many aging services providers, including affordable senior housing communities.

Older adults with low incomes can be particularly at-risk during and after a disaster event due to health conditions, limited mobility, social isolation, and restricted access to transportation and other resources.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is requesting that affordable housing providers share potential resources by reporting vacant units to assist with housing survivors displaced as a result of a disaster event. To report vacant units, please use this online reporting form. Please do not complete the form if you do not have any vacancies to report.

In addition, LeadingAge has compiled a disaster preparation and response resource. The resource, available here, covers how affordable senior housing providers should prepare for a disaster event and what to expect after an event has occurred.

Federally-assisted Multifamily Housing communities serving older adults with low incomes, including properties participating in HUD's Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program, can utilize the compiled information from HUD and from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) before and after a disaster event.

LeadingAge members can also donate to or request assistance from LeadingAge's Disaster Assistance Fund. All donations are tax-deductible, and 100% of all donations will go directly to member organizations and their staff to cover a range of needs specific to their emergency.
