Social Security registers more than 2.8 million foreign contributors in September

Since December 2019, before the impact of the pandemic, the system has recorded an increase of 702,687 workers from other countries, an increase of almost 32.5%.

The daily register remained above 2.9 million foreign contributors between 23 and 27 September.

In average terms and without seasonal adjustment, i.e. in the original series, the Social Security registered 2,884,289 contributors from other countries, an increase of 197,299 in the last year. They account for 13.6% of total contributors, the average between January and September of this year being 13.3%.

Average contributors

The average number of contributors in September (2,884,289 employed people) is the highest number of foreign contributors in the series for this month. To this effect, the percentage of foreign contributors out of the total number of national insurance contributors has risen in the original series to 13.6%.

A total of 31.6% are workers from EU countries. Of all the nationalities, Romania is the country with the highest number of workers, followed by Morocco, Colombia, Italy, Venezuela and China.

Of the total number of foreign contributors, 1.6 million are men and 1.3 million are women, having grown 34% since before the pandemic. The number of female contributors exceeds 44% of the total number of foreign workers.

More than 70,000 Ukrainian contributors

Among other nationalities, there are 72,059 contributors from Ukraine, 24,800 more than in January 2022, prior to the start of the war, representing growth of 52.5%.

The majority of workers (85%) from Ukraine are in the General System, i.e., they are salaried workers, and 15.7% are self-employed.

Systems and sectors

Overall, 83.9% of foreign national contributors are in the General System and total 2,418,586. The proportion is similar to that of all workers, with around 84% also included in the General Regime.

In the last 12 months, four sectors of activity have grown more than 10%: Administrative and Supporting Activities (11.3%), Transport and Warehousing, which grew 11%, Health Care and Central Services Activities (10.7%) and Arts, Recreation and Entertainment Activities (10.6%), and several others around 9%: Accommodation (9.85%), Water Supply and Sanitation Activities (9.7%), Trade (9.1%) and Construction (8.96%). Thus, there is a diversification in the areas of employment with foreign workers.

High added value activities

This year-on-year growth is also remarkable in high value-added activities where notable growth is observed in sectors such as Financial Activities (9.6%), Information and Communications, which have increased by 7%, and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities, with an increase of 6.3% in the last year.

By activity, foreign national workers account for more than 20% of the total number of contributors in sectors such as: Activities of Extra-territorial Organisations and Bodies (28.4%), Hotels and Restaurants (28.8%), Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Fishing (24.6%), and Construction (20.9%). In the Special Household System and the Special Agricultural System, close to 44% and 33.8%, respectively, are non-Spanish workers.

The Self-Employed Scheme registered 459,651 contributors of other nationalities, i.e. 16% of the total number of self-employed people. In the last year, foreign contributors in this regime have increased in number by 7.4%.
