BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Parks and Recreation Division, along with the Florida Forest Service, is scheduled to do a prescribed burn of approximately 2.6 acres of prairie at Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center (3501 S.W. 130th Ave., Davie, FL 33330) weather permitting, on Thursday, November 14, 2024. The equestrian trails are planned to be closed for the day.
Prescribed fire is a management tool we must use to maintain natural areas. In addition to increasing biodiversity and improving wildlife habitat, this management tool is essential to maintaining various vegetation communities and will decrease the threat of a catastrophic wildfire by reducing the thick undergrowth.
The prescribed burn will be conducted by professionally trained firefighters from the Florida Forest Service in conjunction with Broward County Parks.
Specific weather conditions are required for the prescribed burn to be conducted. If the weather conditions are not met on the day of the burn, the fire will be rescheduled to another day.
