WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tonight, Donald Trump announced that he will nominate Doug Burgum as his secretary of the Department of the Interior.
Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen's energy program, issued the following statement in response:
"With jurisdiction over 500 million acres of land and 1.7 billion acres offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf, "Burgum is poised to prioritize the American Petroleum Institute's call to exploit America's federal land and offshore waters for expanded oil and gas drilling at the expense of public health and the climate.
"Burgam's financial ties to Big Oil should be disqualifying, as his family leases 200 acres in North Dakota to Harold Hamm's Continental Resources for oil drilling. Americans deserve cleaner air, water and a future free from climate-induced disaster, not yet another Big Oil lackey to fill Trump's cartoonish cabinet that increasingly resembles reality television."
