Holiday Travel 2024: Expect Delays and Plan Ahead

The holiday season is upon us, and millions of Americans are gearing up for travel. According to AAA's end-of-year travel forecast, a record-breaking 119.3 million people will be hitting the roads and skies between December 21 and January 1, narrowly surpassing the 2019 travel numbers.

Road Warriors Beware: Traffic Peaks and Pitfalls
If you're planning a road trip, brace yourself. Nearly 90% of holiday travelers (107 million people) will be driving, and we predict major delays in some large metros. The worst travel day? Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 22.

Top Traffic Hotspots
Some cities will experience mind-boggling delays. Washington, DC tops the list with potential travel times increasing by a staggering 160%, while Boston and Seattle aren't far behind, with expected delays doubling typical travel times.

Strategic Travel Tips
To minimize headaches, consider these strategies:

  • Travel early in the day, ideally before 11 AM
  • Avoid peak commuting hours
  • Be prepared for travel times to be up to 30% longer than usual
  • Have a flexible schedule if possible

Safety First
As travelers hit the road, they should:

  • Get enough sleep before driving
  • Follow speed limits
  • Take breaks every 2 hours
  • Be aware of roadside workers and follow "Slow Down, Move Over" laws

Alternative Travel Options
Not up for driving? Air travel is booming too, with 7.85 million passengers expected-a new record. However, be prepared for higher prices, with domestic tickets averaging $830 and international flights around $1,630.

Whether you're heading to sunny Orlando, historic Charleston, or cruise destinations in the Caribbean, a little planning can make your holiday travel smoother and more enjoyable.

Safe travels and happy holidays!
