UK: Press remarks by High Representative Josep Borrell ahead of his meeting with Foreign Secretary David Lammy

Good morning,

This morning I will be welcoming our friend, the British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, before chairing the Foreign Affairs Council.

I invited David [Lammy] shortly after he took office, to join the colleagues, the [European Union] Ministers of Foreign Affairs, to discuss security challenges. There are many security challenges that affect both of us - in the European Union and in the United Kingdom.

We are neighbours, we are partners. We share the same concerns.

We stand by Ukraine, against Russia's [war of aggression]. We support the United Nations Charter - and we share the same concerns about the violence in the Middle East. We both call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza. On that we are strongly together, calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East war.

We are convinced that in these dark moments, with so many challenges around the world, a strong continent - because we are part of the same continent - requires a strong partnership.

So, we will discuss about how we can work together in security issues.

I know that we both have the same ambition to cooperate, to strengthen our cooperation in security and defence, because the security challenges that we are facing go across borders - they do not know borders.

This is the purpose of inviting David Lammy, [British Foreign Secretary] to our Foreign Affairs Council. I will have a breakfast with him to prepare, in order to lay the foundations of a stronger bond between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Thank you.

I will inform you later about our meeting.
