(BOWIE, Md.) - Anew online web series features the Bowie State University marching band highlighting the pride and culture around homecoming season for HBCUs. The Symphony of Soul was the focus of the first episode of "Homecoming: Spirit and Soul," a series on the new Black Fam TV streaming platform, co-owned by Whoopi Goldberg.

"It was an interesting opportunity to show what we have going on here at Bowie State," said Billy Bennett, the marching band's director. "It put the spotlight on the university. Anything we can do to bring light to the university, we're all for it."

The episode followed the band as they prepared the various routines planned for homecoming weekend. Current and former band members shared their thoughts on what it meant to gear up for what some called the most important event in the band's schedule.

"If you had to raise the bar for a specific occasion, Homecoming would be that occasion," said Bennett.

"The halftime show from the Symphony of Soul is super important," said Gerrad Hines, a former Bowie State student and band alumnus. "The football game is not complete without a decent halftime show. And if there's another band there, it makes it even better."

Bennett and the band are basking in the attention and excitement that the Symphony of Soul has drawn to Bowie State. He was especially pleased that students could share their personal stories with the film crew during the shoot, as it echoed his belief that the band shows a unique cross-section of Bowie State through the various students who join together to give the university its sound.

"We have a representation of the university in the band room," said Bennett. "We have all disciplines reflected in our band program. We are one of the university's ambassadors, and it's a very high honor."
