Volusia County will resume sandbag operations tomorrow, Oct. 6, at the same times and locations as today. Earlier today, the National Weather Service classified the disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Storm Milton, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before reaching Florida on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

While the storm's intensity and exact landfall location are still uncertain, Volusia County may experience 4 to 6 inches of rainfall over several days, with some areas possibly receiving more, and winds ranging from tropical storm to hurricane strength.

Volusia County residents can pick up sand and sandbags from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the following locations:

  • Volusia County Fire Rescue Station 23, Turnbull Station, 1850 Pioneer Trail, New Smyrna Beach
  • Volusia County Fire Rescue Station 34, Indian Mound Station, 1700 Enterprise-Osteen Road, Osteen

Residents may fill their sandbags at both fire station locations and should bring a shovel. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per household.

Additionally, the Volusia County Corrections Division will distribute pre-filled sandbags through a drive-thru service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Volusia County Branch Jail, 1300 Red John Drive, Daytona Beach. Each vehicle is eligible to receive up to 10 pre-filled sandbags.

Proof of Volusia County residency is required at all three County-operated locations. Several municipalities are also distributing sandbags. Most require proof of residency within their jurisdiction. Residents living in incorporated cities should contact their local government for eligibility guidelines.

Volusia County staff will continue coordinating with state officials and the National Weather Service to assess potential local impacts from the storm. Residents can stay updated by downloading the Volusia Emergency Management app, following the County's social media channels, or visiting www.volusia.org.
