D.A. Bragg Announces Indictment In Stabbing At Dominican Day Parade

October 9, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. today announced the indictment of JOSHUA CANTERO, 20, for slashing a man after jumping on his car at the Dominican Day Parade in August 2024. CANTERO is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Attempted Assault in the First Degree, two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. "As alleged, Joshua Cantero slashed a 65-year-old man multiple times while he was waiting to pick up his wife from work," said District Attorney Bragg. "Assaults on older adults are reprehensible, and those who commit these acts of violence in Manhattan will be held accountable. I hope the victim continues to heal from this assault."

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on August 11, 2024, at approximately 3:35 p.m. on West 45th Street and 8th Avenue, CANTERO was walking down the street during the Dominican Day Parade and started jumping up on cars parked along the street.

A 65-year-old man was sitting in his car waiting to pick up his wife from work when CANTERO started jumping up and down on his car. After the man got out and told CANTERO to get off his car, CANTERO jumped off, came around the car and lunged at the man with a knife. While the man was backing away, CANTERO swung at him, slashing his face.

The victim continued to back away and went to his car. As he was getting into the car, CANTERO lunged with a knife into the car. The 65-year-old man tried to stop the knife from slashing him, but the knife slashed his hand.

CANTERO was stopped by police 15 minutes later on West 45th Street. The victim was treated for the cut on his face and received stitches on his hands and fingers at the hospital.

Assistant D.A. Ashlyn Dean (Trial Bureau 40) is handling the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Robert Ferrari (Bureau Chief of Trial Bureau 40) and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division).

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Police Officer Mahfuz Alam of the Midtown South Precinct.
