Cook County Commissioner visits District 59 schools, meets with educators and students

ELK GROVE VILLAGE - Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison toured schools in Community Consolidated School District 59 (CCSD59) on Tuesday. Morrison made the visit at the request of the District 59 Education Association (DEA). He met with students, staff and visited two schools.

"We think it's important for all of our elected officials to see first-hand how our schools work and the needs that we have. We are so thankful to Commissioner Morrison for taking time out of his schedule to see the great things students and teachers are doing in D59. He was more than willing to talk to our students and staff about the issues that matter most to us," DEA President Ann Wing said.

While in District 59, Morrison visited Grove Junior High's orchestra class, experienced the Advancement Via Individualized Determination (AVID) program and was interviewed by the student council. He also visited Rupley Elementary School and sat in on a dual language kindergarten classroom as well as a second-grade classroom.

"It was a pleasure to visit the outstanding schools in School District 59. I saw firsthand the resounding impact of our community's commitment to education." said Commissioner Morrison. "I am incredibly thankful for the amazing teachers, students, and support staff we have, and I will continue to support and value their hard work."

"As union members, we are deeply invested in our students and their education. The reality is that most of the decisions about what happens inside our classrooms is made by someone outside of them. We're invested in making sure our elected officials spend time inside the schools they help govern," Wing said.

DEA represents more than 760 teachers, certified staff and education support professionals throughout the school district who serve approximately 5,800 students in CCSD59.
