City Council President Sara Nelson (Position 9 - Citywide) has announced the formal process to fill the vacancy after the resignation of Councilmember Tammy Morales (District 2), effective Jan. 6, 2025.
"We look forward to hearing from and considering the leaders from District 2 who are willing to put themselves forward during this critical time for Seattle. This is especially true as we turn to the Comprehensive Plan and continue our work to enhance public safety and increase accountability," said Council President Nelson.
The City Charter gives the Council 20 calendar days to fill a vacant position. This 20-day period begins Jan.7, 2025, the first day following Councilmember Morales' official resignation, and ends on Jan. 27.
From the date of the appointment, the newly appointed councilmember will serve until the 2025 General Election results are certified by King County Elections and the newly elected councilmember representing District 2 takes the oath of office.

Opens: Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.
Closes: Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
Completed applications must be received by the City Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 in order to be accepted. An application is considered complete if it includes all the required attachments:

Public forum hosted by a community organization
Seattle Municipal Code 3.93.010 A states that the Council shall also publish application procedures for community groups interested in participating in the public forum development process.
The date of the public forum has not been determined but is anticipated to occur on or about January 21.
Community groups interested in participating in the public forum development process are encouraged to submit their input by email to [email protected] by Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m.

Anticipated City Council vote
A Special (full) City Council meeting will be scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27 to vote on applicants. A successful candidate will be appointed once they receive a simple majority of at least five votes.
In the event the Council fails to fill the vacant position by the end of the 20-day period on Jan. 27, the council must meet and vote every business day, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays until the vacancy is filled (Charter Article XIX, Section 6).
