Celebrating 50 Years of the Safe Drinking Water Act

On December 16, 1974, the Safe Drinking Water Act was passed by Congress.

This landmark federal legislation has been a key driving force safeguarding the quality of tap water in the United States for the past 50 years.

Every time you turn on your tap and drink fresh, delicious water, you can thank the Safe Drinking Water Act.

If you are one of the 1.6 million people in the Seattle region who receive Seattle Water, you can also thank the dedicated staff at Seattle Public Utilities for providing some of the best drinking water in the nation. Our staff work around the clock to keep Seattle Water safe, protected, great-tasting and "pure from the start." You can read more about the quality of Seattle Water in this year's Drinking Water Quality Report.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water, we are thankful for all those who continue to help ensure our most precious resource (drinking water) is safeguarded. Join Seattle Public Utilities in celebrating the Safe Drinking Water Act by having a tall glass of Seattle Water!
