Tampa Electric's Florida Conservation and Technology Center: A Place for Nature and Innovation

Imagine a place where nature and technology converge to protect wildlife, inspire future generations and pave the way for a sustainable future. Tampa Electric's Florida Conservation and Technology Center (FCTC) is that place.

Located on 500 acres of waterfront near our Big Bend power plant, FCTC is a center of collaboration and innovation. It brings together a diverse network of partners, including Tampa Electric's own Manatee Viewing Center and Tom Hernandez Clean Energy Center, The Florida Aquarium, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the University of Florida and the Guy Harvey Foundation.

Together, we're working to safeguard Florida's unique ecosystems while educating and engaging the community.

A Sanctuary for Wildlife

At the Manatee Viewing Center, visitors from around the world gather to witness the gentle giants. Manatees happily take winter refuge in the warm waters provided by our Big Bend Power Plant, which creates a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary by offering these unique animals critical protection from the cold.

The center also plays a crucial role in manatee rescue and rehabilitation. Our special accommodations for manatee releases are ideal for our rehabilitation partners like ZooTampa, SeaWorld and Epcot. Rehabilitated manatees are frequently released into our warm waters and are tracked to ensure their continued health.

Nearby, The Florida Aquarium's research center provides care for some of the world's most endangered sea turtles, nursing them back to health before releasing them into the wild. The aquarium is also leading efforts to save Florida's coral reef tract by growing and spawning endangered coral species, with globally recognized success.

Next door, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) plays a vital role in replenishing Florida's fish populations by spawning and releasing sportfish via its Marine Fisheries Enhancement Center. In partnership with the University of Florida, they research innovative hatchery techniques to support this mission.

Bridging Education and Conservation

FWC is also dedicated to fostering a love for the outdoors among young people. Through its Suncoast Youth Conservation Center, kids participate in summer camps where they kayak through mangroves, fish and learn skills like archery.

And, we're proud to support the Guy Harvey Foundation, a renowned organization that brings local teachers and students to explore science and nature firsthand. These experiences inspire a deeper understanding of ocean conservation and the importance of protecting our natural resources.
