November & December 2024

Every year, the holidays bring an abundance of food, festivities…and well, waste. Amid this year's festive gatherings, discover how to reduce your food waste, repurpose decorations, and celebrate a zero waste holiday season with a bit of creativity and simple swaps.

One of the easiest ways to help our environment is to eliminate food waste. Food waste has a life far beyond disposing your leftovers - did you know that landfill-bound food waste emits methane, a hazardous gas known as a climate super pollutant?

Taking only what you know you'll eat is the best way to eliminate food waste. But, if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, read on for tips on how to reduce your food waste, and waste in general, this holiday season.

National Drive Electric Week

Electric Vehicle Showcase at Ventura Harbor

October was Energy Awareness Month, and The Environmental Sustainability Division was at the Electric Vehicle (EV) Showcase event at the Ventura Harbor last month for National Drive Electric Week. Private EV owners proudly displayed their personal EVs at the Ventura Harbor, providing a great opportunity for visitors and locals to chat with owners about their experience with EVs.

How Could an EV Benefit You?

Significant Savings - Annual fuel costs for an EV is about $485 and $1,117 for a gas-powered vehicle, according to a 2018 study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute.

Use the EV Fill Up Toolto calculate a comparison cost of filling up a gas-powered car versus an EV.

Low Purchase Costs -Many federal, state, and local incentive and rebate programs can help significantly lower the sticker price of an EV.

Environmental Benefits -Compared with a gas-powered car, an EV will have lower emissionsover its lifetime.

Help Keep Ventura Styrofoam Free!

A friendly reminder to City of Ventura residents that you can help us educate local businesses on the environmental impacts of using Styrofoam (also known as EPS - expanded polystyrene).

If you recently visited a local business providing Styrofoam containers, please email: [email protected] so we can help them find sustainable alternatives.

As of July 1, 2021 the City of Ventura prohibits businesses selling food and beverages from using Styrofoam containers such as cups, plates, bowls, meat trays, clamshells and coolers. Styrofoam is a prevalent form of litter found in storm drains, creeks, rivers, beaches, parks, and open spaces. For more information and resources, please visit: EPS Ban

You can help support our community's efforts to preserve the health and beauty of Ventura's open spaces for the enjoyment of all!
