Two Years in Government: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Tajani’s Foreign Policy Action at the Foreign Ministry

On 22 October 2022, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, swore in before the President of the Republic. On 22 October 2024, Prime Minister Meloni's government, the first in Italy's history to be led by a woman, turned two years old and became the seventh longest-lasting government of the Republic.

In order to list and describe the most important results achieved by the government, the Prime Minister's Office has drafted a document that encompasses and enhances the contributions made by the State's entire administrative machinery.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has been at the core of the government's action to enable Italy to acquire a new centrality and renewed prominence at the international level. Deputy Prime Minister said: "I have immediately placed - as central pillars of my mandate - the government's consistency, reliability and credibility, even in the face of geopolitical crises, for making Italy a protagonist within the EU and NATO, as well as the centrality of the enlarged Mediterranean; support for the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU; the development of a balanced relationship with China through the new strategic partnership; a relationship on an equal footing with Africa and the Global South, and a relaunch of relations with Latina America."

It is precisely Africa's security, stability, and prosperity that have been placed at the centre of the Italian G7 Presidency's agenda. The implementation of the Mattei Plan - with over 30 development cooperation projects and a budget of 5.5 billion euros - is tangible evidence of Italy's renewed commitment to Africa.

Italy is also at the forefront of diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in the face of the major international crises that have unfolded over the last two years. Just think of the decision to host the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome in 2025 and the "Food for Gaza" initiative, launched by Minister Tajani himself to provide concrete aid for the food security and health of Palestinian civilians.

These two years have been full of activities, projects, collaborations, and important results, ranging from the tactical command of the Aspides Mission in the Red Sea, to the strengthening of assistance to compatriots abroad, to the launch of the "Tourism of Roots" initiative, to the activities supporting exports and the internationalisation of companies.
