Introducing Maine's 2025 Teacher of the Year

October 10, 2024 · Veteran Wiscasset Educator Honored for Innovation, Classroom Success

Educate Maine and its partners are pleased to announce Maine's 2025 Teacher of the Year!

Becky Hallowell is a fourth-grade classroom teacher at Wiscasset Elementary School and Lincoln County Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching Maine students for 30 years.

Known for her dedication to place-based and project learning, her mentorship of new educators and her love of the outdoors, Hallowell strives to connect her students to their environment and their community.

Hallowell earned her B.A. in early childhood education from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1994 and her M.S. in educational leadership from the University of Southrn Maine in 2011. She grounds her work in the belief that learning is more powerful when linked to content students personally value and find meaningful.

Maine's Teacher of the Year is chosen from among 16 County honorees, the selection based on a rigorous review process, including site visits. Educate Maine partners with the Maine Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and the Maine County and State Teachers of the Year Association. The year of recognition offers honorees multiple opportunities for professional development, service and mentorship and networking, and connects the honorees with teachers of the year from across the country.

In addition to supporting student learning, Hallowell is committed to her own lifelong learning and that of her colleagues, as a mentor and mentor trainer. She has teamed with the Maine Math and Science Alliance in research connecting place-based learning and science and presented her work widely to other educators.

In her free time, Hallowell enjoys exploring new trails and discovering unique mushrooms and geologic formations.
