“Home Is Somewhere Else” Screens Tuesday

Home Is Somewhere Else, a film that provides a window into the hearts and minds of three migrant families, written and directed by Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos, will be screened on Nov. 19, 2024, at 7 p.m. in the Bruce Featherston Life Sciences Auditorium.

Jorge Villalobos said the screening tour, Between Dos Mundos, intentionally includes universities and colleges in the U.S., "specially where immigrant students are an important part of the student body," said Villalobos. "Jose García Moreno explained to me that LMU has a humanist essence and is deeply interested in migration and human rights issues."

The film tells three independent stories about undocumented immigrants. "One of the main objectives of this film is to share a message of empathy regarding the migration subject," said Villalobos. "More than ever, it's important to decriminalize the narrative about undocumented, immigrants and deported families."

There are many benefits to using animation, one is that it protects the identity of the characters. "But most important, animation helps us talk about sensitive matters from another point of view, said Villalobos. "It also helps the story by doing visual metaphors and recreating the past of these families. Animation is very powerful to show a more subjective view of the protagonists of this film."

This event is free and open to the public. The filmmaker and LMU faculty will participate in a panel discussion after the film.
