New attack on Spanish agricultural products and other goods by French farmers

New attack on Spanish agricultural products and other goods by French farmers

20.11.2024

Question for written answer E-002600/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Cristina Maestre (S&D), Rosa Serrano Sierra (S&D)

The farmers' protest campaign spreading across France in recent days has included worrying altercations at the Spanish border targeting lorries carrying Spanish products. Their passage has been blocked and some vehicles have been forcibly emptied and the goods destroyed.

These acts are not only an indiscriminate and unjustified attack against Spanish agriculture, they also run counter to the principle of free movement of goods enshrined in Article 28 of the TFEU. They are also anathema to the fair competition that must prevail in the EU single market and endanger the safety of professional drivers.

In light of the above:

  • 1.What action will the Commission take regarding the days on which the free movement of goods between Spain and France was prevented and the costs incurred as a result?
  • 2.What compensation methods are in place to cover the losses caused by the dumping and destruction of goods?
  • 3.How will the Commission enforce the EU principle of freedom of movement and ensure that the goods being transported and the safety of drivers are not endangered?
