(BOWIE, Md.) - Students from Bowie State University will have the ability to pursue more environmental and conservation careers through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which provides additional pathways to permanent employment with the agency after graduation.

"This is an exciting time for Bowie State to partner with our sister institutions Bethune Cookman University and Alabama A & M University along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said President Aminta Breaux. "Together we hope to continue to address environmental and conservation issues and make an impact beyond the research our students and faculty are conducting. We're thrilled to sign the MOU to become a member of the consortium and look forward to our growing partnership with the Service."

Presently, only 4.3% of the agency's workforce is Black. The consortium is built upon the shared belief that the Service's mission is best served by recruiting, welcoming, and empowering bright, driven professionals from diverse backgrounds who can help find effective solutions and connect with a rapidly changing America.

"Adding three more universities to our national consortium is the culmination of years of work," said Siva Sundaresan, Deputy Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Recruiting and hiring students from varied backgrounds makes our workforce more representative of our nation and helps us meet wildlife and environmental challenges for all Americans."

Alabama A&M University and Bethune Cookman University signed the MOU with Bowie State University bringing the total number of schools in the consortium to seven. The other institutions of higher learning in the partnership are the University of Texas at San Antonio, New Mexico State University, Tuskegee University and Fort Valley State University.
