Dr. Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, professor of computer science in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, served on a panel discussing the use of artificial intelligence in public health, safety and well-being at the IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics as part of IEEE Future Directions Initiative.

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization with over 460 thousand members dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, focusing on informatics and computing in healthcare and life sciences.

"We have used machine learning for many years in medical informatics, but with new developments in AI technology, the medical and life science fields of research and practice are advancing in interesting ways that can contribute towards improvements in public health and public safety," Ahamed says.

The panel also focused on how technologies can support the health and wellness of public safety personnel, including during natural disasters like wildfires or earthquakes.
