St. Francis School District participated in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's (MMSD) Fresh Coast Green Schoolyards Program, resulting in green infrastructure projects at all three schools in the district: Willow Glen Primary School, Deer Creek Intermediate School, and St. Francis High School. The projects received funding from MMSD's Green Infrastructure Partnership Program and Green Solutions programs. Together, these green schoolyards can manage over 280,000 gallons of water each time it rains.
All three schools provide students with exposure to attractive native plants. A combination of bioswales, native landscaping, and rain gardens helps manage water where it falls and provides valuable green space and habitat for birds and pollinators.
Nestled into the green features at Willow Glen Primary School are walking paths and outdoor learning areas, offering students an immersive learning experience away from the confines of a traditional classroom.
