The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is calling on witnesses seen in doorbell camera footage as an investigation into a suspicious fire that took place in southwest Edmonton earlier this week continues.

At 4:27 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) was called regarding a large structural fire in the Desrochers neighbourhood. It was reported that a large multi-unit complex was on fire at approximately 4 a.m. in the area of 119 Street SW and 35 Avenue SW. Approximately 70 people were displaced by the fire and no injuries have been reported at this time.

Police have since identified a person of interest who was seen riding a bike towing a small cart in the area of the fire at 3 a.m.

Doorbell camera footage that was provided to police also shows a male and female witness walking with a wagon and a stroller at 3:05 a.m. in the same area that the suspect on the bike was last seen.

Detectives with the EPS Investigative Response Team (IRT) continue to work closely with EFRS investigators and are investigating the fire as suspicious.

"We are thankful for members of the public who have stepped up and provided us with video footage that has identified two potential witnesses who might have critical information to assist our investigation," says IRT Det. Nigel Phillips. "If you were the people in this footage, or if you might have doorbell camera footage that has captured the suspect on their bike in the Desrochers neighbourhood at approximately 3:00 a.m., please let us know."

Anyone with the requested video footage or other information related to the fire can contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
