Devils Postpile National Monument Seasonal Closure Oct. 28, 2024

Date:
October 24, 2024

Mammoth Lakes, CA - Starting October 28, Devils Postpile National Monument will no longer offer public services during the 2024 season. No public programs, parking, water, or bathroom facilities will be available within the National Monument until road access is restored for the 2025 season.

The National Park Service manages approximately 800 acres of land within the Reds Meadow Valley, including the Devils Postpile geological formation and Rainbow Falls. Each year, this National Monument historically closes sometime between October 15 and the end of October due to winter storms. Recent weather has allowed us to operate longer this year, but with cooler temperatures on the horizon, the park is preparing for winter. Please visit our website for more information at https://www.nps.gov/depo/index.htm.

Inyo National Forest manages road access and many recreational resources within the valley. Reds Meadow Road construction is ongoing, and vehicle access is only available on weekends until weather conditions or road repairs prevent safe travel. In winter, the road is not plowed during or after snowstorms. More information about Reds Meadow Road is available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/learning/safety-ethics/?cid=FSEPRD1127643.

Visitors may still access destinations within Reds Meadow Valley by utilizing trail networks but please be aware that there are no services in the area. Bring water and be prepared for a backcountry experience. In case of emergency, please contact 911 for assistance.
