LATROBE, PA - Saint Vincent College held its 20th annual Winter Commencement on Dec. 14 at the Performing Arts Center in the Robert S. Carey Student Center. Ninety-two students were awarded degrees or certificates.
The Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing conferred 38 degrees. The School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences conferred 31 degrees. The Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government conferred 23 degrees.
Michael G. Covone, a doctor of nurse anesthesia practice major from Bellefonte, received the Award for Academic Excellence in the Major Field of Study.
The graduates were presented by Dr. John T. Delaney, vice president for academic affairs. Rt. Rev. Martin de Porres Bartel, O.S.B., S'84, archabbot of Saint Vincent Seminary and chancellor of the College, delivered the invocation.
The Hon. Mary C. McGinley, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County, delivered the Commencement address. Rev. Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C'87, S'91, president of the College, presented McGinley with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
McGinley was appointed as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 2019 by former Gov. Tom Wolf, then was elected to a 10-year term in 2020. McGinley is a graduate of Penn State University and the Duquesne University School of Law. Her uncle is the namesake of the Carey Center on Saint Vincent's campus.
"I am a Bearcat now, too," McGinley said with a smile.
"Judge Mary McGinley is no stranger to service, problem solving and honoring her duty at a time when many people seek the limelight by brash, self-promotion and denigrating antics," Father Paul said. "Judge McGinley displays character and values consistent with the Benedictine Hallmarks. Her temperament is well-suited to the judicial role and reflects the Hallmarks of stability and discipline."
The Rev. Maximilian Maxwell, O.S.B., C'07, S'14, director of campus ministry, closed the ceremony with a benediction.
