Governing body needed on AI regulation that includes medical professionals and consumers

Published 10 October 2024

A governing body consisting of practising clinicians and medical professionals is needed to provide active oversight of AI in healthcare.

This week we published our submission to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) consultation on mandatory guardrails for safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Australia.

The submission says there is an obvious need for legislative amendments that will foster effective AI risk management and promote a unified regulatory response to emerging AI challenges. It also notes that significant existing regulation in healthcare provides a strong framework to embed new provisions for the challenges of AI in healthcare and ensure patient safety, privacy and ethical standards.

We are calling for dedicated mandatory AI standards for healthcare, and for a dedicated governance body consisting of practising clinicians, medical professionals, consumers and technology developers for the active oversight of AI application in healthcare.
