European Hydrogen Backbone: Boosting EU Resilience and Competitiveness

The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative is set to revolutionise the EU's energy landscape, playing a pivotal role in the region's journey towards decarbonisation and energy security. With the aim of meeting ambitious climate targets and securing a competitive industrial base, the EHB emphasises the essential role of hydrogen infrastructure, including storage and terminals, in delivering low-cost, renewable, and low-carbon energy to consumers across Europe.

The EHB's latest position paper, published during the Hydrogen Week (18-21 November), highlights the urgent need for public support to kick-start investment in hydrogen pipelines and storage facilities. This infrastructure will enable a reliable and affordable energy supply, connecting hydrogen production from the most cost-effective sources to key consumption centres across the EU.

Public Support is Key for Hydrogen Infrastructure Development

The development of a dedicated hydrogen infrastructure will require significant investment. The EHB calls on EU institutions and Member States to support these anticipatory projects to de-risk investments and facilitate the creation of a pan-European hydrogen network. This will lay the groundwork for a competitive hydrogen market, fostering Europe's industrial competitiveness and helping European industry and transport sectors to transition to a low-carbon future.

Ensuring Energy Security and Affordable Decarbonization

The EHB initiative aims to develop a 58,000 km hydrogen pipeline network by 2040, with about 60% consisting of repurposed natural gas pipelines. This network, together with underground storages and port terminals, will stabilise energy supply and demand across Europe, making the energy transition more affordable while reducing dependency on external sources. Hydrogen infrastructure is recognised as a cost-effective solution for achieving net-zero targets.

Driving Europe's Climate and Industrial Future

With the EU aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, the EHB's efforts align with broader European ambitions. The initiative showcases how a well-coordinated hydrogen infrastructure can not only support the EU's climate goals but also reinforce energy security and boost the competitiveness of European industries. These advancements will allow Europe to remain a leader in sustainable technology and industrial innovation.
