The Minister for Justice, Hon. Siromi Turaga, officially opened a Regional Cybercrime and Electric Evidence Workshop at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort, welcoming participants from across the Pacific to collaborate in building stronger defences against cyber threats.

This critical workshop, aimed at enhancing skills in cybercrime prevention and handling electronic evidence, brings together law enforcement officials and legal experts to share insights and strategies for combating digital crime.

In his address, Minister Turaga highlighted the evolving nature of cyber threats, including phishing, ransomware, and financial fraud scams like the recent M-Paisa scam.

He emphasised Fiji's commitment to tackling these issues, noting the recent enactment of the Cybercrime Act 2021 and Fiji's membership in the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, aligning the nation with international standards.

The Minister underscored the importance of adapting laws, training the right officers, and building both national and regional capabilities.

He called for ongoing collaboration to protect the Pacific's digital landscape, urging participants to use this opportunity to devise strategies and strengthen alliances.

"No foreign nation or hacker should be able to compromise our security or economies," he affirmed, emphasising the region's resilience and unity.

Hosted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and supported by the European Union for the Pacific, the European Commission, and the Council of Europe, this workshop signifies Fiji's dedication to advancing the capacity of Pacific nations in the fight against cybercrime and digital threats.
