City picked up 19 million pounds of litter, debris in one year

Published on November 05, 2024

In Fiscal Year 2024, the City of Fort Worth yielded significant results through its collective litter control efforts.

Why it matters: Environmental Services, along with other City departments, have a variety of programs and services that aim to create and maintain a clean, safe and attractive city. Between citywide litter cleanups, volunteer-led cleanups, grant-funded programs, interdepartmental collaborations, partnerships with outside organizations and emergency cleanup responses, the City was able to make a positive impact for Fort Worth this year.

In FY24, a total of 19,666,130 pounds of litter and debris were collected and removed, through all collective litter control efforts. This includes 218,586 pounds of litter removed through citywide cleanup events and volunteer-led efforts.

Additional key accomplishments:

  • Removing litter and debris from 8,902 illegal dump sites.
  • Receiving 12 new street sweepers, which launched in September 2024.
  • Incorporating services and support to new Neighborhood Improvement Project areas.
  • Supporting interdepartmental response and special cleanups, including I-30 and I-35 access roads, intersections and rights-of-way; increase of litter removal and mowing cycles for public properties, such as parks; and Sandman Hotel explosion emergency response and cleanup efforts.
  • Supporting special events with street sweeping and litter removal, including Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, Professional Bull Riders Stockyard Showcase, Cowtown Marathon and other events.
  • Continuing supplemental litter control along TxDOT highways with contracted litter crews through UpSpire.

Moving into FY25

In FY25, all current litter control programs and services will continue. Six City-led litter cleanup events are scheduled.

  • Dec. 14, 2024: Diamond Hill Special Event Litter Cleanup
  • March 22, 2025: Cowtown Great American Cleanup
  • April 12, 2025: Carver Heights Special Event Litter Cleanup
  • June 14, 2025: Meadowbrook Special Event Litter Cleanup
  • Sept. 13, 2025: Ash Crescent Special Event Litter Cleanup
  • Oct. 11, 2025: Neighborhood Litter Stomp (FY26)
