Call for Participants | Capacity Building Workshop for Traditional Architecture Conservation Skills in the Asia Pacific Region

Background:

The World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region (WHITRAP) in Suzhou focuses on the protection of traditional architecture and the youth education of World Heritage. In November 2024, WHITRAP Suzhou will cooperate with UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia (UNESCO Beijing) to hold a Capacity-Building Workshop for Traditional Architecture Conservation Skills in the Asia-Pacific Region. The host city of Chaozhou in Guangdong Province, China, is a famous historical and cultural city, known for its traditional architecture, as well as construction and conservation skills. This workshop will recruit participants from China and the broader East Asian and Southeast Asian regions that are deeply influenced by Chaozhou culture.

Qualifications:

  • This workshop is for professionals working in traditional architecture conservation in the Asia-Pacific region. A total number of 28 participants will be accepted.
  • Professionals with the following background are particularly encouraged to apply: Professionals and managers working at World Heritage sites, higher education and research institutions, private companies of traditional architecture conservation, social groups working in related heritage conservation fields, inheritors of traditional architecture construction skills, professionals working in cultural heritage revitalization, ancient city conservation planning, sustainable tourism and development.
  • The working languages of this workshop are Chinese and English. Participants must be proficient in English, especially listening and speaking.

Application:

  • Application deadline: 18 October 2024 (23:59 Beijing Time)
  • All files must be sent as email attachments to WHITRAP Suzhou
  • Application materials:
  1. Original application form (please download the application form via the link below), including signature and photo;
  2. Copy of Chinese Resident ID (for international applicants: legal passports and other supporting materials required for visas);
  3. One recommendation letter by the institution, organization, or company to which the applicant belongs (with the seal of the institution);
  4. Copies of other relevant materials that can prove the applicant's qualification in the industry (such as professional title certificate, professional skills certificate, etc.);
  5. Case Introduction: PowerPoint or PDF slides to be used during professional exchange presentation (in both Chinese and English, within 30 minutes). The slides should present a case study on the theme of traditional architecture conservation skills that the participant has directly participated in. The case should introduce the construction, protection, restoration, and utilization of ancient buildings, heritage tourism planning, or other related issues. Applications with outstanding case studies will be given priority.
