Detroit Man Charged with Setting Two Women on Fire

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Roberto Romero, of Detroit, in connection with setting a 57-year-old Detroit woman and a 50-year-old Detroit woman on fire. It is alleged that the defendant worked with the two women.

On September 9, 2024, at approximately 6:00 a.m., at a building in the 1000 block of West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it is alleged that Defendant Romero sprayed a flammable liquid on the victims, before setting them on fire and fleeing the scene. The defendant was apprehended a short time later. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital for treatment. Further facts and evidence will be placed on the record at the preliminary examination.

Roberto Romero has been charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, Placing Offensive Substance Causing Serious Injury, Placing Offensive Substance Causing Physical Injury, two counts of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, and two counts of Felonious Assault.*

"It is hard to imagine a more scarring and painful scenario that being set on fire. The alleged actions of this defendant will be met with vigorous prosecution and an aggressive path to accountability," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

He was arraigned and remanded to jail this afternoon 36th District Court before Magistrate Dawn White. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled on September 19, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled on September 25, 2024, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Ronald Giles.
