Fall in Love with Blake’s Orchard and Cider Mill

The fall season is upon us. That means that there is a chill in the air, football is on tv, and everything at the store is pumpkin spice. But for our family, there is no better way to spend a fall weekend day than at Blake's Orchard and Cider Mill.

When I say Blake's, I'm talking about the original orchard located in Armada. I know what everyone says, "the crowds are better at other locations." But for us, the large crowds are part of the experience and a testament to the success of their business.

Our annual Blake's trip starts early in the morning during a weekend day (depending on the forecast) either in late September or early October. Late enough for the pesky bees to be gone, but early enough for the selection of pumpkins and produce to be more plentiful.

The day starts like any other with our kids, trying to wake them up is almost impossible. But the reminder of fresh cider and donuts always does the trick to get them out of bed.

We arrive at Blake's early, usually around when they open. First thing is first, time to get in line for some cider and donuts and walk around the store for a bit before the crowds start pouring in.

Our second stop is to the Orchard Cafe. For my wife and kids, this is the highlight of the trip. Most people choose one of the staples of the cafe; a bratwurst, hot dog or fresh corn on the cob. For my family, the nachos are the go-to item of choice. I guess the cheese is better than anywhere else.

After our tummies are full, the next stop for us is to get wristbands for the Funland and for the tractor rides. Some highlights for us are the Animal Petting Farm, Storybook Barn, and the Haunted Village. They are some of the older attractions, but they never seem to disappoint and bring me back to when I was young.

After a couple of hours at the Funland, our last stop is to take the wagon ride around the farm. It's a relaxing tour around the facility, and provides you an opportunity to choose your family pumpkins. The wagon ride back is always a bit sad for us, because that usually means that we're done for the day. There are other attractions to visit, but the family is usually tired and full by that time, and ready for the drive home.

I encourage everyone to go out to Blake's and make their own fall traditions. This is my family Blake's story, but everyone has their own experience. The great thing about Blake's is that there is something for everyone. Whether you're a fan of food, haunted attractions or hard cider they have it all.
