Architectural Excellence Recognized by Loudoun Joint Architectural Review Board

The Loudoun County Joint Architectural Review Board (JARB) has announced the winners of its annual awards program that recognizes individuals, organizations and companies whose projects in locally designated historic districts have made a positive and lasting contribution.

In addition, the JARB selects winners nominated by the public for the Community Blue Ribbon awards, which are given for projects located across the county, and not just within designated historic districts. The 2024 JARB award winners are:

Community Blue Ribbon:

  • Hamilton Baptist Church, for the restoration of the 1889 church belltower.
  • The Waterford Mill, for the interior and exterior restoration of the 1830s merchant mill.

Excellence in Additions:

  • 208 Loudoun St. SW, Leesburg, for the subordinate and cohesive addition to the 1915 residence.
  • 408 E. Washington St., Middleburg, for the appropriate addition to the 1830 property and rehabilitation of the existing stone smokehouse.

Excellence in Restoration:

  • 5 S. King St. (China King), Leesburg, for restoration of the China King facade with salvaged vitrolite glass.
  • 102 N. King St., Leesburg, for the restoration of the portico after a car crashed into it.

Excellence in Rehabilitation:

  • 40135 Main St., Waterford, for the landscaping and exterior rehabilitation of the 1804 residence.

Excellence in Signage:

  • 1 W. Market St., Leesburg, for the hand-painted and carved wood signs in the historic district.
  • 8, 14, 20 Cornwall St. NW (St. James Episcopal Church), Leesburg, for the cohesive, carved wood signage throughout the church campus.
  • 5 S. Madison St. (Federal and Black), Middleburg, for the carved wood signs and window lettering on the 1927 storefront.
  • 17 S. Madison St. (Middleburg Books), Middleburg, for the carved wood signs and window signage on the circa 1800 building.

Excellence in Architectural Detail:

  • 15 S. King St. (Green Tree Tavern), Leesburg, for the careful repairs and preservation of the building's wood architectural details.

Excellence in New Construction:

  • The Birkby House Conservatory, Leesburg, for the compatibility of the new construction conservatory with the existing late 18th century federal residence and 1830s carriage house.
  • Middleburg Town Hall, 10 W. Marshall St., Middleburg, for the compatible new construction of the Town Hall and Police Department within the Historic District.

Loudoun Heritage Register

In addition, plaques were awarded to owners of properties that have been added to the Loudoun County Heritage Register. The Loudoun County Heritage Register program, developed by the county's Heritage Commission and administered by the Department of Planning and Zoning, highlights significant and diverse heritage resources in the county to encourage a higher level of community awareness, stewardship and preservation of those resources. The plaque program is a partnership between the county and the Loudoun Preservation Society. Plaques were awarded to:

  • Ashfield Farm, Round Hill
  • Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Leesburg
  • Belmont Farms, Waterford
  • Historic Douglass High School, Leesburg
  • Fieldstone Farm, Paeonian Springs
  • Laurel Hill, Waterford
  • Rosemont Farm, Waterford
  • Route 9 Tenant House, Hamilton
  • Springfield Farm, Lovettsville

The JARB hosts the awards event each year along with the Loudoun Preservation Society to recognize preservation work across the county.

The Joint Architectural Review Board includes representatives of the Loudoun County Historic District Review Committee and representatives of the architectural review boards in Leesburg, Middleburg and Purcellville.
