Tom Musselman is UW Staff Employee of Second Quarter

Tom Musselman

Even though he has been the University of Wyoming's School of Computing office associate for just one year, Tom Musselman has made quite the impression on his colleagues.

The consensus among Musselman's co-workers is that everyone who meets with him leaves with a very good impression. For that, he recently was selected as the recipient of the UW Staff Employee of the Second Quarter Award.

The award recognizes a UW staff member for efforts toward excellence in the workplace. Established in March 1985 to recognize outstanding staff members as the Employee of the Month Award, the award was revised into the current program in January 1990. The award is given to one current UW staff member every calendar quarter. The staff employee of the year will be named at Staff Senate's Recognition Day celebration in the spring semester.

"In his short time at UW, Tom has quickly come up to speed and has become our local expert on so many processes and systems," a colleague says. "Since starting with us at UW, Tom has elevated our level of efficiency remarkably. He is a doer with follow-through. Tom is not afraid of the big jobs and has tackled our online organization with gusto. He has attend every meeting and makes sure remote participants are connected and able to participate."

Musselman has many duties in the School of Computing, but he concentrates on many of the standard administrative tasks, such as managing the school's academic schedule, purchasing, processing expense reports and event planning.

"I spend a lot of time trying to come up with tools and solutions to help my team stay organized and efficient," he says. "With the school being new and growing rapidly, everyone I work with stays very busy -- keeping organized is more important than ever."

A colleague mentions that Musselman really does improve on all tasks to which he is assigned.

"We have big visions for our department, and Tom quickly stepped up to offer ideas on how to implement many of the things that the director and administration team envisions," the colleague says. "Tom is quick to volunteer for tasks that he knows he can do, but especially for tasks that he knows he can improve. Tom brings fresh ideas and insight to discussions, and inspires the team to learn and do more. He instinctively improves everything he touches."

Another colleague says that Musselman has become very dependable and efficient in the short time he has been in the School of Computing.

"We were short-staffed, and many of the things Tom is doing now, I was once doing," the nominator says. "I wouldn't be able to do my job as well without him. I'm extremely grateful for him."

The colleague also praises Musselman for his work on campus and for being involved in the Laramie community.

Musselman says he is grateful to have such a supportive team, from Director Gabrielle Allen to others on the administrative team, including Beth Leonard, Beth McMillan, Judy Yates, Raya Hegeman-Davis, Launa Chavez and Jeff Hamerlinck.

"I was very surprised to receive this award. I know there are a lot of people on campus who work very hard and do incredible work, and I wish I could share with all of them," Musselman says. "It's inspiring to work alongside such a talented group of people, and it certainly means a lot to see my contributions recognized."

Musselman will be honored for his award at a public reception from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Room 301 of the Engineering Education and Research Building. Refreshments will be available.

An Employee of the Quarter nominee can be any UW staff employee, and each must receive three nomination forms from three separate individuals. Nominations must be submitted to the Staff Senate office. Forms can be found here.
