Background

In 2021, the EPA revised the Lead and Copper Rule to provide an improved level of public health protection, this rule went into effect on October 16, 2024. The changes focused on identifying and removing lead service lines, providing increased levels of protection from lead exposure in drinking water to children at schools and childcare facilities, and providing information about lead in drinking water to the community.

Durham Water successfully submitted its initial service line material inventory to the State of North Carolina on October 10, 2024, which included the following:

  • No lead service lines have been identified in Durham Water's system.
  • More than 55,000 service lines have been identified as "Non-lead".
  • 54,350 service lines remain classified as "Unknown".
  • 37 service lines have been identified as "Galvanized Requiring Replacement".

All customers whose water service lines have been classified as "Unknown" or "Galvanized Requiring Replacement" will receive a service line notification letter-per EPA guidance-within the next 2-3 weeks. Customers with "Non-Lead" service lines will not receive a notification letter.

Information session topics for October 29 will include:

  • Lead and Copper Rule Requirements
  • Initial service line material inventory
  • Service line notification letters
  • Customer service line identification - $30 water bill credit
  • Lead and Copper Rule Improvements

Video of the information session in English and Spanish will be made available on Durham Water's Lead Safe Durham website (www.leadsafedurham.org) and on the department's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@DurhamSavesWaterNow).
